As of January 1, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that no new applications will be accepted under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) this year. This means Canadian citizens and permanent residents cannot sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residence in 2026.
However, there are still practical ways to bring loved ones to Canada temporarily, with options that are faster, more affordable, and suitable for both short and long visits.
- Super Visa – Best for Longer Stays
The Super Visa is a multiple-entry visitor visa valid for up to 10 years, allowing parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to five years at a time (for applications submitted on or after June 22, 2023).
- Status: Temporary resident (cannot work or study without a separate permit)
- Benefits: Longer stays, lower cost, shorter wait times compared to the PGP
- Eligibility:
- Canadian host must be 18+, a citizen or permanent resident, and meet the minimum income requirement
- Host must provide a signed invitation letter promising financial support
- Applicants must:
- Apply from outside Canada
- Be medically and criminally admissible
- Complete a medical exam
- Have private health insurance valid for at least one year and covering a minimum of $100,000
The Super Visa offers a practical solution for families seeking extended time together, though it does not provide permanent residence.
- Visitor Visa or eTA – Best for Short Visits
For shorter stays, parents and grandparents can apply for a Visitor Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
- Visitor Visa: Required for travelers from countries that need a visa to enter Canada
- eTA: Available for citizens of visa-exempt countries flying to Canada
- Stay Duration: Usually up to 6 months per visit (subject to border officer discretion)
- Requirements:
- Valid passport
- Proof of good health and criminal admissibility
- Evidence of funds for the visit and intent to leave Canada at the end of the stay
Visitor visas and eTAs are simpler to obtain than the Super Visa, making them ideal for shorter trips and situations where meeting the Super Visa’s income and insurance requirements may be challenging.
Which Option is Right for You?
- Super Visa: Best if your parents or grandparents want long-term stays in Canada (up to 5 years per entry)
- Visitor Visa / eTA: Best for short visits lasting a few weeks or months
In Summary:
While the PGP is paused for 2026, Canadian families still have flexible options to spend time with their parents or grandparents. The Super Visa allows extended stays, while visitor visas and eTAs provide a quicker, simpler route for short trips.
