The UK Home Office published a major update called the Statement of Changes to Immigration Rules (HC 1691) on 5 March 2026, introducing new policies affecting student visas, skilled worker visas, settlement routes, and other immigration pathways in the United Kingdom.
These reforms aim to tighten immigration control, prevent visa misuse, and ensure compliance by employers and migrants.
1-New “Visa Brake” Policy
One of the most controversial measures is the visa brake mechanism.
What it means
The UK government can temporarily suspend visa applications from certain countries if there is evidence of misuse of visa routes (for example, high asylum claims after arrival).
Countries currently affected
According to guidance circulated to universities and immigration advisers, the visa brake affects:
- Afghanistan
- Cameroon
- Myanmar
- Sudan
Student visa applications from these countries may be blocked or restricted starting 26 March 2026.
Purpose
The policy allows the UK government to quickly control immigration risks without rewriting the entire immigration system.
2-Higher English Language Requirement for Settlement
The UK is also increasing the English language requirement for settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain – ILR).
Previous requirement
Applicants needed CEFR Level B1 English.
New requirement
For applications from 26 March 2027, the requirement will increase to CEFR Level B2.
What B2 level means
Applicants must demonstrate stronger ability to:
- communicate clearly in English
- understand complex conversations
- participate in professional discussions
Who this affects
This requirement will apply to several routes, including:
- Skilled Worker settlement
- Innovator Founder visa
- Scale-up worker
- UK ancestry route
- family settlement routes
3-New Salary Compliance Rules for Skilled Worker Visa
The UK Skilled Worker Visa route now has stricter salary monitoring requirements.
Old rule
Employers only had to ensure the annual salary met the threshold.
New rule
The salary must meet the required threshold in every pay period (monthly or weekly).
Example
If the required salary is £38,700 per year, the worker must receive:
- the correct monthly equivalenteach month
- not just an annual total
If a worker’s pay drops below the threshold in any pay period, the employer could face compliance action or even loss of sponsorship license.
Why this change was introduced
The rule helps immigration authorities detect underpayment or manipulation of salary earlier, rather than waiting until the end of the year.
4-Global Business Mobility Route Changes
The update also introduced adjustments to the Global Business Mobility routes, including:
- reducing overseas employment requirements for some workers
- allowing quicker international employee transfers
For example, the Secondment Worker route now requires only 6 months of overseas employment instead of 12 months.
This change helps companies transfer international staff to the UK faster.
5-Additional Technical Immigration Changes
Other updates in the March 2026 rules include:
- changes to refugee protection policies
- updates to settlement rules for children joining relatives
- new visitor visa requirements for some nationalities
- adjustments to Global Talent and international business routes
These technical changes affect multiple immigration categories, not just workers and students.
🌍 What These New UK Immigration Rules Mean for Migrants
For migrants and students planning to move to the United Kingdom:
- Immigration checks will become stricter and more controlled
- English language expectations will be higher for settlement
- Employers must ensure strict salary compliance
- Governments may suspend visas for high-risk countries quickly
However, genuine students and skilled workers with strong qualifications and proper documentation will still have clear pathways to enter and work in the UK.
